Ever wondered how Donald Trump won the 2016 election? What exactly compelled so many people to vote for him? I sat down with a brand positioning and messaging expert, Alex James, to find out.

You donā€™t want to miss this one. This one was DEFINITELY an interesting episode. Alex lives in Australia but has visited the U.S. on numerous occasions and makes well over 6-figures with his own company. He helps companies position their brand in a unique way that stands out from their sea of competitors.

One of the prime examples that we discussed that happened in our lifetime? Donald Trump.

Regardless of how you feel about him, take a step back and really think about the marketing genius that was President Trump. He convinced so many people to vote for him and whether it was just his belligerent personality or if you actually agreed with his position on his issues, it all came down to a very meticulous strategy that was implemented by him and his team.

What was that strategy exactly? Brand Positioning.

See, Donald Trump positioned himself in a very unique way against his competitors and had such a huge advantage over them in this department. In the 2016 election, his entire brand was based on him being an outsider vs a political insider. What I mean by that is that he convinced the general public that he was just a regular guy and not one of the politicians that have been in public office in some capacity their entire lives.

And people literally ate his message up. They loved it. They loved that he resonated so well with the general public; saying things no other politician could ever even imagine saying in public, he did it all. And this was exactly the point Alex delivered in our episode today: How important brand messaging is.

If you are starting a company then there are 3 key elements to marketing a successful brand:

Picture a flower:

1ļøāƒ£ The Head: It represents your marketing, itā€™s all colorful and in full bloom, and gets all the attention from the bees (your customers).

2ļøāƒ£ The Stem: The brandā€™s messaging. The more compelling your message, the taller you will stand and the more attention you will get vs the competition.

3ļøāƒ£ The Roots: The brandā€™s positioning. While no one is ever able to see the roots, this is vital because once the brandā€™s positioning is right; the rest of the flower can bloom and grow properly.

These 3 elements are what everyone needs to focus on when marketing a brand to the right audience. If you have these down then you can effectively market to your customers and get them to pay you the big bucks, of course.

Now obviously, if you have wanted to start your own business or build your own brand you have probably researched marketing and in your research of marketing you probably delved into the field of copywriting. (Even if you havenā€™t, keep reading, Alex really put on a masterclass with this and Iā€™ll explain further).

Alex talked about how creating a customer avatar and identifying their needs and their pain points and all this junk is complete BS.

None of that matters because it doesnā€™t get you any closer to what you want to do, which is to produce effective marketing material. Good thing, however, Alex shared with me his secret of how to win your customer over. These are the things that you need to focus on:

The Three Cs:

Customer: What does the customer want? What do they care about?

Category: The category that your brand is in. What market are you a part of? Who are your competitors?

Company: Your product and brand.

Focus on these three things and you will find your positioning sweet spot. Youā€™ll already be ahead of the majority of your competitors by following this secret sauce.
